The 2019 Peugeot Rifter has chosen to differentiate itself from the common MPV with an “open air” look and a superior status. This positioning naturally leads to price inflation. Is it justified? The answer behind the wheel of the petrol version Puretech 110.
At a time when SUVs get bogged down and minivans disappear, families with big needs for space see the offers of transport melt like snow in the sun. The MPV appears today as the solution best suited to the practical constraints that can face everyday homes. They are not sexy for a dime but are practical, spacious and above all much cheaper.
The PSA group was one of the first to exploit the vein with two models transformed from utilities: the Peugeot Partner and the Citroën Berlingo. Since then, Opel has joined the team with its Combo to form a triplet for both individuals and professionals. All three models are manufactured in the same factories in Spain and Portugal. They offer the same engines but are not charged at the same price.
At the renewal of the triplet which took place at the beginning of 2018, the PSA group has set up a distinct marketing strategy for each of its three MPVs and particularly for the Partner. The French firm wanted to upgrade its model to take off its image of utility. To achieve this, it has deployed all the ingredients that make the success of its current models: a fighter design and high-end finishes, not to mention renaming it. His name is now Rifter. A more “chic and adventurous” name. The prices are also accordingly with a more salty bill (up to € 2,500) compared to his twins. Is the investment worth it?
What you will pay in addition, it is firstly the look. The 2019 Peugeot Rifter is distinguished by its cousins the Citroen Berlingo and Opel Combo Life by its adventurer side and the presence of generous protections around the wheels and on the sills. The front panel also differs by a vertical grille and new optics with the “claw” light that we could discover on the new 508. The Rifter is nonetheless a van in the van silhouette.

What matters most is the fundamentals (space and modularity); they are here preserved. The French is equipped with sliding side doors, designed to optimize volumes and access on board and still offers two lengths of bodywork (4.40 m or 4.75 m). In both cases, it can accommodate 5 or 7 passengers with a really satisfying comfort.
To please families, the Rifter is here! It has a volume of trunk XXL ranging from 775 liters under the shelf for the short version, more than 3,500 liters all seats folded for the long version. This volume of mover is made possible thanks to a modularity always well thought out. Thus, we find in row 2 three individual seats – all able to receive a baby seat – which simply fold in the floor thanks to the clever “Magic flat” system. The space in the rear seats is excellent for all passengers! For loading long objects, the passenger seat backrest can be folded and the rear window opened. Storage has also been optimized with, for example, the appearance of a large double glove box made possible by the installation of the passenger airbag in the roof. The roof “Zenith” (panoramic) very appreciated by the customers is renewed and integrates also about fifteen liters of storage.

It was at the wheel of the Puretech 110 3-cylinder petrol engine that we were able to appreciate the progress made in road handling. The 2019 Peugeot Rifter gains in comfort and precision, it is undeniable. The gap between the world of utility and that of the VPs (private vehicles) that put forward brands to encourage you to buy minivan or SUV is being reduced. This good traveler also significantly enhances the sound insulation that was lacking to put the driver and passengers in the best arrangements. The driving position remains, to our taste, too elevated with a seat that deserves more amplitude in its settings (especially for large sizes). It will also get used to the firmness of the seat and back that can, in the long run, play on the comfort of fragile backs. Choosing the Puretech 110 gives you a pleasant driving pleasure in the city because it combines flexibility and liveliness at low speeds.

It is also the interior design and equipment that inflate the Rifter tariffs compared to its cousins. The universe revolves around the now famous i-Cokpit composed of non-digital elevated instrumentation, a small steering wheel and a touch pad. The plastics used on the upper part are not foamed so far, but the presentation is no longer utilitarian. Note that these do not differ from the Berlingo in terms of quality. Our trial version, a mid-range “Allure”, sold 24 650 € with the petrol engine Puretech 110 BVM6, comes standard: 6 airbags, automatic lighting projectors, centralization, recognition of traffic signs, unintentional line crossing warning, precollision system, cruise control / speed limiter, automatic climate control, electric parking brake, 4 power windows and multimedia system with 8 inch touchscreen. In other words, the 2019 Peugeot Rifter is more expensive than the Citroën Berlingo (€ 23,850) for exactly the same engine and equipment and almost € 2,500 more than the Opel Combo Life (€ 22,850), which is certainly stalling some amenities.
