2019 Skoda Kodiaq Scout Review; Offroad Mode is Great
At Skoda, the Scout Claw has been in existence for many years, but today it officially arrives on the great Kodiaq, which thus inherits specificities that do not jump to the eyes at first. Is the “little bonus” offered by the 2019 Skoda Kodiaq Scout version worth a visit?
At Skoda, the news is jostling at the gate in recent months. The arrival of the Kodiaq was a big change for a brand that had so far no SUV to offer if one obviously omits the Yeti. The Kodiaq was the first test of the Czech manufacturer on a segment that is still buoyant and does not see a sign of shortness of breath in Europe. Let’s remember, though, that a new car sold on three currently on the old Continent is an SUV.
The Kodiaq follows the trend and Skoda has chosen to begin its adventure of the high cars by a large jig, with 4.69 meters in length and 1.88 meters wide. An imposing family car which, of course, rests on the modular platform of the Volkswagen Group, which explains the similarities, in terms of proportions, between certain models Seat, Skoda, and Volkswagen.
In the 2019 Skoda Kodiaq Scout version, the Kodiaq has some peculiarities. Only a watchful eye and accustomed to recent Skoda productions will recognize them. The list is rather short in terms of aesthetics: shields and silver mirror shells, “Scout” logos on the front fenders and seat files, and specific rims. and? That’s pretty much it
For the rest, we find the great qualities of the Kodiaq. Proposed in five as seven places, the large Czech SUV has a cockpit with volumes more than generous.
Obviously, in seven-seater configuration, the chest volume is very small, at 270 liters. But if we flip the third row, it climbs to 630 liters. And for those who would need a huge loading space, it is always possible to fold the second row, in which case the capacity rises to more than two cubic meters.
On the infotainment side, we find the classic presentation of the Kodiaq, with a central touchscreen rather responsive (though difficult to handle with gloves, even very thin). The whole of the driving data is centralized in this system, which allows in particular to fetch some interesting options in all-terrain such as the deactivation of the traction control or the tensile controls, in sport mode, to have a control Total. Finally, a button is used to juggle the different modes of driving, including a new one called “Snow”, which was also quite pertinent during our snow and ice test.
2019 Skoda Kodiaq Scout Drive
The 2019 Skoda Kodiaq Scout version of the KODIAQ has some mechanical features. To be only offered in four-wheel drive, first of all, but also to have only the big engines available. There are four, on this Scout Kodiaq: the TSI 150 ch and 180 and the TDI 150 and 190 ch, the DSG box being imposed on the latter (optional on the variants 150 ch). At the test, during this Finnish mini voyage, the highest variant: TDI 190.
A full engine because it boasts 400 Nm of torque on a relatively wide range, between 1750 and 3250 rpm. It is necessary to move the 1 752 kg vacuum of the Scout Kodiaq which is clearly not the lightest of the category (a Peugeot 5008 is much less heavy). But stopping at the comparison of the datasheets would be a very easy shortcut since the Czech is one of the few in the category to offer so many combinations (motors, boxes, finishes, transmissions…). And in the segment, it is very difficult to find an SUV as powerful in diesel, four-wheel drive and with an automatic box of a level at least correct.
This 2019 Skoda Kodiaq Scout is therefore supposed, as the name implies (remember that the Scout Claw is intended for specific models “offroad” at Skoda), being a fan of mud, difficult trails and technical passages. In practice, it turned out that the Scout Kodiaq is rather comfortable under these conditions, although it is clear that the rather average attack and leakage angles (due to significant overhang) do not predestine it for a rocky block Franchisseur quarry.
The driving mode allows, as we announced in the first page, to juggle different types of driving: Eco, normal, sport, comfort or even snow, the last one, which is effective on snow. Its principle is simple: change the response to the accelerator, the direction and the traction controls to have a very smooth and seamless driving.
The complete transmission, for its part, does its job, without even being a permanent mechanical transmission. Remember that the Skoda system is actually a disc clutch controlled in an electro-hydraulic way. Placed on the rear axle and associated with a self-locking differential (also electronic), it allows to divide the torque in different ways: almost everything (90%) on the front in normal conditions on the road, and almost everything (85%) on a single wheel in the worst Cases where three out of four wheels would have no grip. The problem with these electronically controlled systems is that they are always a little less responsive than in the case of a permanent four-wheel drive. A latency sometimes occurs at the loss of motor skills, but nothing breaker in normal use. In any case, the advantage is that when you drive on the road, the four wheels are not engaged, which saves fuel. Finally, a small detail: the Scout version of the Kodiaq is 6 mm higher than a classic Kodiaq. Did we feel a real difference in use? Not in the least.
2019 Skoda Kodiaq Scout Equipment
The Scout finish is based on the level of mid-range Ambition. It adds the bodywork elements mentioned on the front page, the four-wheel drive, the silver door thresholds, the leather/Alcantara upholstery with Scout logos, the basement protections, the indoor LED ambiance pack, the decorative inserts in Wood or the aluminum crankset.
2019 Skoda Kodiaq Scout Pros
Small addition on this 2019 Skoda Kodiaq Scout with a specific button “offroad” located under the speed lever. This mode allows to have a response to the accelerator less candid, but also and above all to activate the speed control downhill and to have a display (pictured above) of some useful parameters (vehicle angles in the slope, in particular) in Off-Road on the multimedia screen.
