Volkswagen continues to expand its SUV offering with the 2019 Volkswagen T-Roc, which is placed under the Tiguan with a size close to that of the Golf. But isn’t it at the risk of vampirizing the sales of the famous compact? To determine this, we took the wheel of the T-Roc in the only gasoline engine that it shares with, the 1.0 TSI 115.
Attracted by Golf but are a bit put off by its austere appearance and its default image of choice for Trade representative? Looking for something that would have the qualities but would be a little more fashion, a little more funky? Look no further, Volkswagen has thought of you with the T-ROC, which can be presented as the during SUV of its famous compact. But beyond the very subjective aesthetic or statutory aspect, it also has some additional qualities.
Starting with his interior. At 4 234 mm long, the T-Roc may make 24 mm for Golf but shows a better packaging, offering as much room to the knees of its occupants, but more to the level of the head and elbows.
Same finding for the chest volume: If the Golf offers a slightly higher load length, the T-Roc offers a much larger volume in 5-seater configuration, at 445 liters against 380, one of the best values in the category.
What about motorization? In the weeks following the launch of the 2019 Volkswagen T-Roc, only three mechanics are proposed: The 1.0 TSI of 115 hp with six-speed mechanical gearbox, the 2.0 TSI of 190 hp and the 2.0 TDI of 150 hp, the latter two being only available with the double clutch box DSG7 and a ITH the complete transmission 4Motion. On the petrol side, there is a good bet that we have the two extremes that are proposed and that there will be neither more nor less powerful. In anticipation of the more than probable arrival of the 4 cylinders 1.5 TSI Evo with deactivation of the cylinders, only the small 3 cylinders supercharged of 999 cm3 with direct injection allows a comparison of petrol with the Golf which benefits from the same engine, with however 110 C. Slightly lighter than 30 kg and offering less catch to the wind, it is barely more swift and economical, but this is in detail, with 9.9 s at 0 to 100 km/h and 4.8 l/100 km announced in mixed against 10.1 s and 5.1 L/100km respectively for The 2019 Volkswagen T-Roc (We found 6.5 l at the end of our test in Corsica).
Question chassis, both offer a very close behavior, more oriented comfort than precision, not necessarily very fun but not the least effective either, the SUV tilting, however, a few degrees in a curve.
Still the question of price. Our two protagonists are proposed only in the first two levels of equivalent finishing, and, surprisingly, the 2019 Volkswagen T-Roc is displayed cheaper, between 21 990 and 24 300 €, compared to 22 730 to 24 950 € for Golf. More habitable and with a larger volume of the chest with very close performance and behavior, all for less, the SUV is, therefore, more interesting than the compact in this engine, but what about the competition in the same Category?
2019 Volkswagen T-Roc Price and Rivals
We already know since our comparison published last month that the Mazda CX-3 2.0 SkyActiv-G 120 exceeds it with a short head, mainly thanks to its engine and chassis approval and its price/equipment ratio, the German winning without penalty the part habitability and chest volume. This is really the strong point of 2019 Volkswagen T-Roc since it also dominates in this department its other rivals are the Opel Crossland X 1.2 Ecotec Turbo as well as the cousins Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X in version 1.6 E-TORQ 110. However, he also drew his game in terms of performance and consumption, showing himself to be both more swift and sober. Qualities he does, however, pay at a high price, his compatriot at the Blitz starting at 20 000 €, in the United States at $23000
