2020 Audi E-Tron Review: The Real Tesla Competitor!
Audi is late for the feast of the electric but still has the ambition to attract all the spotlight on its first model, the 2020 Audi E-Tron, presented in public for the first time at the last World of the Auto. Or in any case to deviate a little from Tesla who has been alone in the center of the stage for a long time. Will the ring mark succeed, while at the same time tackling the offensive of its historic rivals Mercedes, BMW and Jaguar? It was in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, that we went driving for the first time.
After ignoring, then despising and finally envied Tesla’s results in the category of electric vehicle, it seems that the European automotive premium has finally decided to replicate. Because it’s not a secret: if they have a firepower and a much higher economic stability, the goal is to replace the American on his throne. And it’s naturally the category of SUV, certainly not the most efficient but undoubtedly the most popular, which is in the line of fire, with the infantry that are the Jaguar I-Pace, Mercedes EQC, BMW iX3 and so this e-Tron. After trying the British, a first electric jet for the brand but still surprising by its maturity, can the brand rings better?
2020 Audi E-Tron Dimensions
The 2020 Audi E-Tron is an SUV. Measuring exactly 4,901 mm, it is positioned midway between the 4,663 mm of a Q5 and the 5,052 mm of a Q7. It is therefore much more imposing than a 4,682mm I-Pace Jaguar or a 4,761mm Mercedes EQC and is today the closest to the Tesla Model X dimensions.and its 5,052 mm. However, what strikes first is how much its line is in the purest “thermal” style, starting with this wide grille which, if it was just more openwork, could quite be able to cool and feed a good big V6 FSI or TDI.
No strange aesthetic elements so to distinguish it from the rest of the range as do many other manufacturers, this 2020 Audi E-Tron could perfectly be a new conventional model that could be called Q6, satisfying all the latest stylistic elements of Audi. But he allows himself a futuristic fantasy: you can choose optional camera mirrors, a world first for a production car, with an image broadcast on OLED screens to the front doors on each side, which allows passing the Cx of 0.28, identical to that of an A6 Avant, 0.27. With its much lower front surface, the break sedan, however, retains the advantage in terms of SCx despite its conventional mirrors.
2020 Audi E-Tron Interior
On board, we obviously wanted once again not to scare the regulars of the brand with a dashboard not distinguishable from other Audi models. The set is dominated by the implementation of Full HD digital instrumentation behind the steering wheel and two touch screens of the MMI system in the center, replacing the vast majority of buttons. The top one, 10.1 inches, allows you to control infotainment, connectivity, navigation, and settings for energy recovery or recharge for example. The lower one, 8.6 inches, is responsible for adjusting comfort equipment and air conditioning. The 2020 Audi E-Tron also carries all the latest driving assistance systems: adaptive system regulator operating in traffic jams, 360 ° camera, warning of blind spots, active assistance in maintaining the track, etc. With up to five radars, six cameras, twelve ultrasonic proximity detectors and a laser scanner, nothing seems to escape his electronic vigilance.
2020 Audi E-Tron Engine Specifications & Battery Range
Mechanical question, Audi began by doing its homework: no question of starting from an existing thermal base, the 2020 Audi E-Tron is entitled to its specific platform, the pledge of uncompromising packaging, maximizing the habitability through perfect mechanical integration. And if the latter, with an electric motor for each wheel train and a built-in battery flat between the two, reminds you something, it’s because it’s the recipe used by Tesla since the launch of the Model S in 2012 and Model X in 2015 for its models D. And for good reason: it is ideal. In the absence of physical transmission, the floor of the cabin is almost flat despite the four-wheel drive in the absence of drive shaft, which allows to have five real seats and to sit in the middle on the back seat, even if there are not three independent seats, without it being a punishment. In addition, the space at the knees as the head will suit even the largest. The trunk volume is not penalized, on the contrary, from 660 to 1,725 liters, and it is even supplemented by an additional 60 liters under the front cover, very useful for absorbing the charging cables and the toolkit which we often do not know what to do in an electric car. Finally, the 700 kg batteries positioned very low allow to have a center of gravity similar to that of a sedan despite a ground clearance ranging from 146 to 222 mm, and concentrated in the wheelbase with a motor on each axle, provide an ideal mass distribution of 50/50.
The front engine develops 170 hp and 247 Nm while its counterpart in the rear is a little more generous, 190 hp and 314 Nm, a total of 360 hp and 561 Nm, which reduces the 0 to 100 km / h in 6.6 s. And if you’re really in a hurry, switching from D to S mode and crushing the accelerator into the carpet, the two asynchronous motors provide 408 hp and 664 Nm for 8 seconds, reducing the time needed to stop at 100 km / h in 5.7 s with a maximum speed limited to 200 km / h. To power them, the2020 Audi E-Tron has a battery with enormous capacity of 95 kWh, which can be compared to the size of the tank of a thermal vehicle. Today, only Tesla is better with its X100D and 100 kWh of battery, the whole being however billed 110 900 €. However, Audi prefers to preserve the life of its battery and its useful capacity would be in the end (in the conditional, since it is visibly difficult to obtain official information) of 83.6 kWh, compared to 84.7 kWh of a Jaguar I-Pace announced yet for 90 kWh. However, it is especially the efficiency which determines the final autonomy, and, before taking the wheel, the unclear “more than 400 km” announced officially according to the WLTP standard deserves to be explored by the practice in second page of this essay.
Crucially, recharging can be done in several ways, starting in the classic sector 2.3 kW and for which it will be necessary to wait about forty hours. Via a wall box in AC, the e-tron comes standard with a charger of 11 kW of power to reduce the time to 8:30, while a 22 kW option will be available from the middle of next year , allowing a charge in 4 hours 30. But the Audi can cash more, much more. Via its Combo CCS DC plug in its left wing (a second socket, “only” Type 2, located on the right side), it can indeed absorb a power of up to 150 kW, thus achieving a full 80% in less than an hour. This is better than Tesla, which accepts up to 130 kW, but there is a big but: the American manufacturer has indeed a dense and growing network of superchargers only accessible to its models while the 2020 Audi E-Tron must be content for its fast loads of an Ionity network pushed by BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen and Ford which today has only ‘Hexagon and only 80 by 2020. A huge undeniable advantage for the American, since it’s a bit like selling a thermal road by not being able to find service stations in town.
2020 Audi E-Tron Price
The Price of the Audi E-Tron start Around $93.895, which places it, like its dimensions, halfway between the I-pace Jaguar at $89.098 and the Tesla Model X 75D at $10.5490 but it is not yet clear what will be its standard equipment endowment, which temporarily prevents us from assigning a note. The opening of the orders is scheduled for January 2019 and it will enter the concessions at the end of February.
