2020 Ford Edge Redesign, Changes, Price & Equipment – Ford’s family SUV passes on billiards for a mid-career facelift. It evolves mostly outside and under the hood, we will see it.
The Ford Edge is the biggest SUVs of the brands. Indeed, if we put aside the pickup Ranger, its 4.83 m (2 cm more than the old one) make him look at the Kuga (the compact) of 31 cm and the Ecosport (the urban) of 74 cm. Because in the United States, its main market, it is considered a compact. It competes with, among others, the Volkswagen Touareg, the Kia Sorento, the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Toyota Land Cruiser on the general side, but also the Mercedes GLE or the BMW X5 Premium side. Models that he can get closer today, we’ll see.
2020 Ford Edge Redesign & Changes
Already, the look. Reviewed in depth. No risk of confusing the two “phases” if put side by side. Front, back, everything changes. The grille, entirely new, takes again the forms of that of the Kuga and Ecosport, version XXL. The Vignale finish of our day wear, dressed in a pretty ruby red, adds to this grille “V floating” chrome, a nice detail. The headlights are also reviewed, the new LED light signature, and they no longer affect the grille. The whole bottom of the shield is also redesigned. At the back, exit the banner linking the lights. Against the current of fashion, the 2020 Ford Edge takes blocks well separated, the drawing softened. The tailgate widens further to better accommodate the license plate, while the shield now has a dual exit
The entire face of the 2020 Ford Edge is transformed. Better, worse, opinions are divided. At least the scalpel shots were not shy.
The 2020 Ford Edge keeps its dashboard as it is. Not necessarily an evil. It is clear, well thought out, ergonomic, with features that go through the 8-inch touchscreen of the Sync 3 multimedia system (the size today seems a bit small), others are in direct access. But also well finished, with quality materials. Only a few assemblages can always be ticked in places. But it is globally, we had already said at the release in 2016, a pleasant surprise.
The only changes are at the center console. The passage from a double-clutch Powershit robotized box with an imposing control lever to a new 8-speed automatic gearbox with converter, controlled by a small rotary lever without connection to the gearbox, frees up a lot of space. As a result, there is more and larger storage, including one that can accommodate the induction charging of compatible phones.
The space on board is always remarkable. The passengers are very comfortable on the comfortable back seat, with room for their knees, their heads, and their shoulders. Even the transmission tunnel is very discreet.
The volume of the cargo is not left behind, still set at 602 liters seat in place, and 1,847 liters when folded.
Engine Specs & Transmission
Under the hood now. There too, change. That’s the end of the current 2.0 diesel, available in 180 or 210 hp. We must now comply with new pollution standards. And it’s a brand new 2.0 diesel that sticks to it. It exists in 150, 190 and 238 hp, but the French market will only be entitled to the most powerful version. It will be 238 hp, 500 Nm of torque, 216 km / h in top speed and a 0 to 100 km / h in 9.6 s, which is a lot. The 4×4 transmission is now intelligent: when it is not needed, it disconnects the rear axle to become 4×2. This makes, according to Ford, gain 6.5% of consumption. And it’s not a luxury. Indeed, the 2020 Ford Edge is a whale. With 2.1 tons announced by Ford (maybe 2.3 in reality), the boxing in the heavyweight category (as all his associates must admit). Its official mixed consumption is 6.9 liters (but of course …) and its CO2 emissions rise to 180 grams. It was 152 for the old 2.0 in 210 4×4 Powershift.
Suddenly, the penalty 2018 hurts, for those who rushed to buy it this year (€ 9,050). What we do not recommend. In 2019, the penalty goes down, but remains very high, at 7,340 €. Ouch! It’s still almost 13% of the selling price. A Volkswagen Touareg equivalent, 3.0 V6 TDI 231 4WD Auto, is at 167 grams and € 4,253 of “only” penalty. And its performance is better (218 km / h, 0 to 100 in 7.5 s).
Last upheaval, the disappearance of entry-level. From now on, only one engine, in two finishes. ST Line at € 53,500, and Vignale, our test model, over-equipped (see equipment page), at € 56,900.
On board, we enjoy a padded comfort. Studded tires make some noise when bitumen sometimes reappears, but soundproofing, aided by an active noise reduction system, is quite remarkable. It’s hard to believe, even in acceleration, that we drive a diesel. It circulates almost naturally, well (well) shod, at speeds between 90 and 100 km/h.
But the first braking reminds you to order. We are on snow, even ice. And the baby weighs his weight. By combining the two, we quickly understand that we must be proactive in addressing changes in direction. Otherwise, they are frights at the key. And the acceleration too, you have to have a light foot, because the 500 Nm of torque still push well, and undermine the motor skills on this ground must be confessed very special.
We promise you, we will resume for a more objective and detailed test on a more usual ground. But overall, if the road benefits approach those of the previous, this 2020 Ford Edge is always a good option in the category.
2020 Ford Edge Equipment
The 2020 Ford Edge is only available in two finishes, simplifying the range but making it less affordable. However, the price/equipment ratio is quite remarkable.
Thus, in ST Line finish, are present, in addition to the traditional at this level of the range: intelligent LED high beam, electric hands-free hatchback, access and keyless start, recognition of traffic signs, the Bang & Olufsen 1000W 12-speaker sound system, induction charger, leather / suede combination upholstery, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel and windshield, 21-inch wheels, sports chassis, the Copilot360 ° pack (help to maintain the center of the track, help with emergency avoidance, automatic braking with pedestrian detection), the rearview camera, adaptive cruise control with stop and go function in traffic jams, Ford Pass Connect (embedded WiFi modem).
The Vignale finish, compared to € 3,400 more, features perforated leather upholstery, leather-covered dashboard, “Vignale” backlit door sills, comfort suspension with 20-inch wheels, roof bars Satin aluminum, specific grille with floating V, dual-LED adaptive headlamps with anti-glare function, metallic paint and spare wheel 18-inch galette (repair kit for the ST Line).
We see it’s downright complete and even very techno. Especially as owners can download an app to remotely control their car (opening, closing, preheating, tire pressure monitoring, fuel level, geolocation, etc.)
