This success is due to its excellent price/performance ratio, which translates into an above-average technological endowment and outstanding driving qualities. For this fourth and new generation, the oval brand is distributed with a blank sheet based on an unprecedented platform, lighter than a hundred pounds equivalent version. The latter has the big advantage of optimizing the space on board since its wheelbase increases 5 cm. We now have room for the legs in the back and a trunk that follows the same direction, now with 378 liters. It’s better but still far from the French tandem, Peugeot 308 (420 liters) and Renault Megane 4 (434 liters).
The design itself is streamlined to reduce the majority with reduced overhangs and a lower roofline. Visually, our trial version, a 5-door hatchback in high-end Titanium finish, does not rely on exuberance. However, Ford retains a wide range of aesthetic maneuver with several variations including ST Line sports finish, a body break and a new crossover version called Active. On board, Ford did the housework. On the model of his little sister, the Fiesta, the dashboard is refined and the industrial quantity of buttons disappears. Under the hood, Ford renews the 4-cylinder diesel developed with the PSA group. Called BlueHdi at Citroën and Peugeot, the 1.5 here takes the name Ecoblue. In contrast, it uses a NOx trap instead of an SCR (Catalytic Reduction) system that does not require an additive (AbBlue). It complies with the current Euro 6 standard dTemp and with 101 g of CO2 / km (with the 17 ” rise) escapes the ecological malus.
This medium power engine (120 hp) fulfills its task without too much difficulty thanks to its comfortable torque (300 Nm). He shows exemplary goodwill from the lowest regimes and can also respond presently when the right foot gets heavier.
Exceedances are certainly not disruptive, but you will not have to sweat once in the left lane. The 4-cylinder is for the first time associated with a new 8-speed automatic transmission with converter, whose control is now rotary. Its use is not complicated and the driver takes the fold very quickly. If this box sometimes lacks responsiveness, overall the gear changes are fluid and the staging well calibrated.
This engine is also available with a 6-speed manual transmission. For those who list the miles and especially the companies, this version will appeal on the one hand for its well-controlled sound level and on the other for its very reasonable mixed consumption. We found an average of 5.2l / 100km during our test.
The previous Focus had already set the bar in terms of road behavior, this new generation follows suit with an armada of driving aids. If our trial version is not entitled to the multi-link rear axle (reserved for high power levels), nor the active suspension (option: € 1,000), the synthesis between dynamism and comfort we appeared yet very convincing. This 2020 Ford Focus is easy to handle, comfortable and above all accurate.
On the other hand, visibility is plagued, served by a high waistline and small glazed surfaces, particularly with regard to the rear window. However, the driving position is excellent thanks to comfortable seats, wraparound and a range of settings that can accommodate all templates.
