2020 Jeep Renegade GSE T3 Review: The Cheapest Renegade | Jeep finally succumbs to the call of the three-cylinder by offering one on his Renegade restyled last year. But was it really a good idea?
Freshly (though slightly) aesthetically restyled last year, the Jeep Renegade also had the opportunity to renew its range of petrol engines with, in addition to the four-cylinder 1.3 turbo 150 hp, a brand new 3-cylinder 1.0 turbo exclusively for front wheels 120 hp at 5,750 rpm and 190 Nm at 1,750 rpm and associated only with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Even before boarding the 2020 Jeep Renegade GSE, the charm is already working. it is undoubtedly the most original model of the yet very well-supplied SUV category with this concentrate of the typical details of the brand. Two large round projectors separated by a grille with seven vertical openings and a silhouette drawn to the ruler until the cutting of the wings make it a Jeep that can be recognized by several kilometers, especially in the color “Colorado Red” of our model of test, even if we approach the caricature with the light signature of the tail lights way jerrycan and the US Army stars on the doors (sold 149 € in accessory).
Unfortunately, the shape strongly serves the function, the short windshield and its thick uprights associated with the wide, long and horizontal hood strongly penalize the visibility, making difficult the maneuvers in the car parks, the diameter of the aircraft carrier turning not arranging nothing.
The 2020 Jeep Renegade is only 4236 mm in length, so you get the impression that it’s nearly five meters long. But the driver has only to look over his shoulder to get back to reality: the legroom of the rear passengers is barely higher than that offered by the Renault Captur and Peugeot 2008 measuring 14 and 10 cm respectively. less and trunk volume is one of the smallest in the category, at 351 liters.

At startup, the unprecedented 999 cc supercharged can hardly hide its nature of three legs with its characteristic voice but it is sufficiently well encapsulated and balanced not to come to invade the cabin, whether by noise or vibration. But his qualities stop there: he is completely stifled by the large mass of the set, announced at 1320 kg empty but by a mechanical gearbox with ratios as long as the lever stroke, which is not said.
Even a cost less start requires skid clutch more than a reason to avoid jolts and gear changes are constant to maintain a uniform speed of progression, all for poor performance. The 0 to 100 km/h is thus carried out in 11,2 s, respectively three and eleven tenths more than an Opel Crossland X 1.2 turbo 110 and a Volkswagen T-Roc 1.0 TSI 115 to very close gauges.
So, with such concessions to make, we are entitled to expect particularly low consumption, is not it? This is not the case, on the contrary: even deploying all our eco-driver skills, we have not managed to go below the average 8 l /100 km at the end of our test on a mixed course.
The 2020 Jeep Renegade GSE catches up a bit with its chassis: it is not the most agile of the market, far from it, but it is however comfortable without taking too much roll in the curves. The management offers a nice resistance even if lacking the slightest feedback. The restyling has also enabled a deep upgrade of the equipment with a standard or optional equipment that now includes adaptive cruise control, emergency automatic braking, vehicle alert in the blind spot, obstacle detection in reverse, enhanced parking assistance with lateral obstacle detection and multimedia system with, as on our test model, a beautiful 8.4-inch screen (unfortunately placed a little too low) and Apple Car Play connectivity and Android Auto.
