2020 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC Review: No Opponent!
The New 2020 Scrambler 1200 XC is king. king of the streets and king in his class. In 2019, there will be Ducati Scrambler and Triumph Scrambler. Those of Ducati, against those of Triumph. After the 900 already well installed, the Scrambler 1200 are appearing in the Triumph catalog. The engine is none other than the Bonneville T120 and derivatives, Thruxton in mind. In other words, a big piece of twin parallel, grading here 90 horses and 110 Nm of torque. This engine block constantly evolves and limits to the maximum the inertia of its internal mechanical elements. This is to offer flexibility and ease of use, while reducing vibration.
This results in a “lighter” engine, responding to the quarter turn and whose pistons never give the impression of pushing wrongly when cutting the gas. However, the engine brake is present on the first reports, we are reassured. It is even very pleasant to use as the couple is well depreciated. It is not impossible that the rear starts to weave during a release clutch faster than usual, but the bike is recovering easily and quietly online, at least on the road. Another sweet element: the gearbox. Pleasant, locking perfectly, it is also staged in a relevant way to offer elongation and allow a more “sporty” driving.
No power surge, the curve is constant, just like that of the couple. Values are steadily increasing, up to 7,400 rpm and 3,950 rpm respectively. The 5 driving modes implemented can be selected from the right-hand stance and the superb digital instrumentation. We find the Rain, Road, Sport and Off-Road behaviors, as well as a User mode, allowing to retain several configurations. These modes act in fact on several parameters: the reactivity of the engine with the throttle control, the traction control and the sensitivity of the ABS braking.
In fact, the beatings of this valiant heart are of a formidable benevolence. In the upper right-hand position, the double escapement and the imposing diameter line allow the big gases to escape. They gladly sing the song of maxi-trail. Because the 2020 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC proudly claims in its press kit the opportunity to go for a ride in the land. It has been equipped accordingly, thanks to an advanced partnership with the Öhlins suspension manufacturer.
The cycle part has therefore been adapted to a mixed land/road use. We find superb tubeless rims rims anchored on the circle, as well as a mixed tire watch. Originally, this is Metzeler Tourance, but the Pirelli Scorpion Rally have also been approved for the motorcycle for use more enduro. The traditional 21-inch front wheel is also present. The cradle frame for its part only changes the level of the hunting angle of the inverted fork. Diameter 45 mm, its tubes offer a real visual impact, and inspire respect. They are mostly more efficient than conventional fork, according to studies conducted by Triumph during development. We will not complain, especially as the significant deflection has been raised to a very generous 200 mm.
2020 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC Design & Colours
The 2020 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC is a most attractive bike, even if it remains discreet in its khaki green dress. The tank, separated in two by a pretty stainless band, has a capacity of 16 liters. It is supposed to easily accommodate the 4.9 l/100 km of consumption announced by Triumph. In fact, our bike will have disappeared nearly 5.9 l/100 km during our escapades, made it must be recognized at a very good pace. Do not count too much exceed 250 km of autonomy, especially if you take major routes. Even less if you have decided to please you. However, enjoy this moderate appetite for the precious Lead Free, obtained without concessions on the pleasure on the handlebars. The big couple is no stranger to this phenomenon, you will discover.
Appearing elongated and relatively low, despite its beautiful saddle displaying some 840 mm in height, the new 2019 Triumph displays beautiful parts, including an aluminum swingarm, reversible handlebars and a variable section handlebars. The inevitable aluminum shoe, exclusive to off-road motorcycles, comes to the bottom of the cradle, while small side grilles complete the endowment and prevent, as far as possible, the earth from entering the interstices.
It’s hard to be short on the presentation of a modern high-end model, especially with claims claimed by the Scrambler 1200. Triumph soberly titled “Excellence” in its press kit, while saying “establish the new benchmark of the segment “. We let you appreciate the look of the 2020 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC on the shots, while we will try to make quick on the equipment endowment of origin. Let’s take a look at LED lights and turn signals, which are now more and more widespread, as are daytime running lights. Remember, however, that direction indicators benefit from an automatic shutdown. Nice, especially when their switch is so close to the 5-axis joystick to control the TFT instrumentation and Bluetooth connectivity with your smartphone.
True SmartBike, the 2020 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC is the first model motorcycle to benefit from innovative partnerships: one with GoPro action camera manufacturer and the other with Google. Point of Android in command, but a native navigation system based on Google apps, and displayed on the dashboard via the dedicated Triumph application. On the other hand, it will be necessary to pass by the Bluetooth module in option to benefit from these functionalities. About GoPro, said module will be capable of driving a GoPro Hero 7, again from the joystick and instrumentation. The phone can be placed under the seat, in a box provided for this purpose. A 5V USB power supply is also available.
Highlighting the richness of the basic proposal for a motorcycle placed at € 14,800 when it was launched, the 2020 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC incorporates a keyless start. Damage on the other hand that the transponder does not act on the fuel cap, always manual opening and placed under the aluminum cover style “Monza”. On this point, BMW is doing better (even if it is an option). To finish this inventory, we also find a cruise control. Only the heated handles (optional) are missing. Of course, the Scrambler 1200 XC is equipped as standard with an assisted clutch, traction control and ABS driving Brembo M50 (!) Radial callipers. ABS and TC are also disconnectable through the menu “Home”, implemented on the right command.
For you as for us, impatience lurks after such an enumeration of inspiring points. It is time to take possession of the Scrambler 1200 XC, his handlebars tend to aluminum, while his tires are already in the ground.
