Volkswagen celebrates the retirement of the Golf 7 with an ultimate and limited declination, called 2020 VW Golf GTi TCR. This Golf-derived from the eponymous racing model boasts 290 horsepower on the front axle, making it the most powerful Golf Gti in history.
It’s now a tradition. At the end of each generation, Volkswagen launches an ultimate version of its compact. And to celebrate the retirement of Golf 7 which will take place at the end of the year, the German brand has designed the most powerful GTI version of all time (alongside the Clubsport whose power could climb temporarily): the Golf TCR. 290 hp on the front axle, a virtually unbridled v-max and a chassis cut for the track, here’s how to summarize in a few words this Golf which is none other than the road version of the car engaged in the championship super tourism TCR.
And as it is an exclusive car, there will not be for everyone, be available for the market and charged at the high price of € 47,590, excluding penalty of € 1,050! Much more expensive than its competitors like the Leon Cupra, the Civic Type R or the Megane RS.
Volkswagen justifies this prohibitive tariff with a full endowment. At this price, you will be entitled to practically everything in the Golf GTi equipment and technology catalog (digital signage, 8 ” multimedia system with connected services, etc.) plus an aerodynamic kit. right from the competition and marked with shiny black tips that can be found on the skirt, the sills and the diffuser.
The set is camped on huge 19 ” alloy wheels behind which hides perforated braking and oversized, in the front.
2020 VW Golf GTi TCR Interior
Inside him, is much wiser. It has only eccentricity a few red stitching, a steering wheel with a red midpoint and very comfortable sports seats. We would have liked more daring but Volkswagen has retained the austere universe, but very well finished, of the series version. Yet, when we take a look at the specs, this Golf TCR has all to fall the times. Oversized braking, a chassis lowered by 20 mm, a self-locking, controlled suspensions not to mention a 2.0 supercharged petrol of 290 hp capable of shooting down the 0 to 100 km / h in 5.6 s whose V-max is unlimited. Indeed, the electronic clamping at 250 km / h is here neutralized. This manipulation is usually an option, it is here standard on the 2020 VW Golf GTi TCR.
2020 VW Golf GTi TCR Performance
The first question we ask ourselves before paying the tidy sum of 47 590 € is to know, first of all, if this 2020 VW Golf GTi TCR is fun to drive, then, if it is effective. The 2.0 supercharged very torquey (380 Nm) pushes hard in the mid-rev. It is well supported by a DSG7 box that connects the reports as fast as Usain Bolt 100 meters, all coated with a metal sound present but not invasive. On the other hand, on the chassis side, the Golf GTi TCR displays more the temperament of a bourgeois than a real track. The self-locking is not as effective as it was hoped to optimize the motor output curve and its tendency to understeer is more pronounced than its diamond competitor.
For the player side, we will also iron with a back train literally screwed to the ground. The piloted (standard) suspensions offer however a very good compromise between maintenance and comfort to guarantee a daily livable use. Volkswagen offers here an optimized GTi with sensations in the key but always in a bubble of comfort and security
