2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Review; Testing The Redesigned Version

Appeared in 2014 and presented as an urban crossover, the C4 Cactus did not experience the expected success. Too “essential”, too “staggered” maybe… So today Citroën has handed over his work on the craft and introduces us to the “compact” C4 Cactus, reviewed and corrected.
In 2014, Citroën launched the C4 Cactus. A kind of UFO in the car landscape, halfway between a big city girl and an urban SUV, looking like nothing known. Stylistically shifted, certainly, it was. But also shifted in positioning. Wanted and described as an “essential” vehicle (but not low cost!), it displayed interesting fares, while forgetting to pass some equipment yet become the norm. Thus, an absence of counter-towers, folding bench in a single block, rear windows entrebâillantes only, window lift without impulse function or steering column adjustable only in height were its lot.
And he did not leave indifferent. After the correct marketing beginnings, without more, the first buyers wanting to stand out from the other crunchy for him, the sales were eroded. Not a flop, but far from the goals of the brand.
It was therefore urgent to offer him a second youth. And in 2018, place at (very big) restyling. And at the same time, the brand to the rafters takes advantage of it to reposition it in the range. Finished the urban crossover, finished the essential vehicle. The C4 sedan, the Compact of the brand, takes its bow, that to do so, the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus restyling will replace it, while a “real” compact reappears in the range. Ambitious. But with what means?
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Redesign and Improvement
It is true, the style evolves. A lot. In order to settle the lines of the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus, to make them more consensual, Citroën has attached itself to the “sedans”, going in full against the current fashion. So, finished the big air bumps all over the body, finished the roof bars (they become an option) and Hello family air with the rest of the range.
Thus, the front side adopts the double rafters that stretch over the entire width of the car, encompassing the LED daytime running lights. The optics keep the concept of the double floor, but the plastic protections hair bumps under the lower fires have been the trunk, to reappear in a much more discreet way to the low level of the shield. The fog lamps are circled with a customizable plastic hubcap. The shield is completely redesigned.
On the flanks, it is evident from now on the disappearance of the enormous air bumps on the doors. There is only one minimalist line at the bottom of the doors, made of 100% hard plastic, not real air bumps Therefore, which were made of soft plastic and contained air. We also notice, therefore, the disappearance of the roof bars, and that of the large plastic protection on the back side. It is also replaced by more discreet protections at the bottom of the shield. The lights, they adopt the LED technology and a 3d effect.
These changes make the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus (the cactus, since it becomes a compact?) de fact less adventurer, smoother, more sedan. And the disappearance of the roof bars gives the impression that it is less high, even if the ground clearance has not moved, and it is still slightly raised. In short, it is chicer, and the emerald blue color of our trial version, the reprise of the Peugeot 5008, it goes, to tell the truth damn well, especially in the sun. It should be noted that the possibilities of personalization are wider. With 9 body colors and 4 colors of “pack Color” (€90 optional, applies to the inserts on the bottom of the door and around the fog lamps), the number of combinations reaches the 31.
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Interior Changes
In the cockpit, visually, nothing changes. The drawing is taken from the previous one, except at the level of the doors and their armrests (the door handles are kept in the shape of a thing), and the console between the seats. It is nice, we find the digital instrumentation in front of the driver (always without counter-towers), the 7-inch tablet that controls the functions of the car, and the leathery appearance of the glove box lid. We also find, unfortunately, a quality of the materials which we will describe as average, and which, if it did not suffer too much the comparison with the urban SUV, hard to reach the standards of its new category, that of compacts. The rear seats have, for example, molded plastic doors not very rewarding, but above all, the passengers still have only entrebâillantes windows. They will be seated on a 60/40 folding bench, in series on all finishes.
The template of the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus has not evolved, the habitability remains equivalent to all places, i.e. correct at the front, mean more at the rear (thanks to the long wheelbase of 2.60 m). The volume of the chest does not evolve, or 348 litres (1 170 liters bench folded), which places it at the bottom of the scale of compacts (a Volkswagen Golf is at 380 liters, a PEUGEOT 308 to 420, a Honda Civic 478 liters), but remains a very good value compared to son template of the very content shot, which the advantage on the urban travels. Yes, change the category to disadvantages and benefits when the time comes to comparisons.
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Engine Specs
If some things do not change, others yes. For example, it is now possible, as on the outside, to personalize the cockpit, with “ambiance” choices. But it is optional, from the second level of finish Feel. You have to pay from €350 to 1 250 € (in the latter case, you get a superb beige Nappa leather and a red toe board). The steering wheel is now adjustable in depth in addition to the height, the electric windows are impulse and a central armrest appears.
Under the hood, it’s evolving too. We find the 1.2 Puretech 82 CH Atmospheric (118 Nm, 4.7 L/100 km, 109 g CO2 per km), accompanied by 1.2 Puretech 110 ch, manual gearbox (205 nm, 4.5 L/100, 104 g) or automatic EAT6 (205 nm, 5.3 L/100, 119 g). But appears the 1.2 Puretech 130 ch (230 Nm, 4.8 l/100, 110g) in high-end petrol. In the diesel, the 1.6 BlueHDI 100 ch (254 Nm, 3.8 L/100, 99 g) will be found at the launch later by the 1.6 BlueHDI 120.
The level of equipment is also rising significantly. The goal is to enhance the standing of the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus, to arrive at that of the other compacts of the segment. So the basic Live finish, more expensive of 1 750 € compared to the old, is equipped with the manual air conditioning, Bluetooth, the folding bench 60/40, the rear lights with 3d effect, the pulsed windows, a central armrest, but especially the New suspensions with progressive hydraulic stops, which are part, with ergonomic seats, of the program “Citroën Advanced Comfort”, which aims to put comfort at the heart of the strategy of the manufacturer, and therefore at the heart of its models. Seats and suspensions are the spearheads, but Soundproofing has also been improved (new soundproofing under the floor, thicker glazing, new door seals).
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Test Drive
We were longing to see, on the road, what was worth the comforts so touted by Citroën of its new suspensions, after having tried promising prototypes.
We have therefore taken the road with a model 1.2 Puretech 130 ch, in the Shine finish, with optional ergonomic seats advanced comfort. Because yes, it is an option, which goes along with the choice of an interior ambiance. It is therefore charged between 350 and 1 250 €, depending on the choice of ambiance.
And on this point, it’s perfectly successful. These new seats, which use a high-density foam, add a 15 mm quilt, for added comfort and a more rewarding visual aspect. But also they benefit from a lumbar adjustment absent from the previous cactus. It’s a treat for the driver and his passenger. Comfort is real, the fluffy fearsome. It’s like a CX or a BX, known for their comfort of saddlery. Thus, the kilometers are swallowed without fatigue, neither for the back nor for the buttocks.
Regarding suspensions with progressive hydraulic thrust, our judgment is more mixed. Their principle is to include two hydraulic stops in the body of the shock absorber, which brake the movements of the suspension at the approach of the extremes, in a gentle manner, in contrast to the external plastic or rubber stops, which are More violent.
From our point of view, some gifted models, like the Peugeot 308, but there are many other examples, do as well in comfort with classic shock absorbers. Attention, it is not said that the system is not effective because the new 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus is truly comfortable. But the contribution of this new technology does not seem obvious to us. It must be said that the previous model was already an example of comfort.
However, these new suspensions, while being by definition typed padded, preserve a little better the dynamism at high speed, by breaking the body movements and the oscillations on the bumps.
It should also be noted that if the shocks are (very) well absorbed, this is done with a certain noise. The filtration of the rolling noises and those coming from the holes and fittings of shod is not yet fully ensured, despite the improvements. Air noises are not completely eliminated. We stay here a notch below the Volkswagen Golf, Peugeot 308 or Renault Megane, to which the C4 cactus is now measured.
Moreover, this Citroën remains true to itself. The chassis is very healthy, the handling excellent. The steering is flexible at low speed (a little too much) but well held when the pace accelerates, which contributes to the precision of driving. The gearbox is nice to handle, braking calls no criticism. Go to those points.
The engine itself is well known and already tested by our care on other models. It is especially nice. Alive, punchy, he even amazes by his performances and would suggest that he makes more horses than announced. The 0 to 100 km/h shot in 9.1 seconds and the peak speed of 207 km/h confirm these good impressions. It is more flexible enough, is expressed in a not unpleasant noise, and has only small defect only a slight response time of the turbo. Because with a reasonable consumption (between 7.5 and 8 liters of average on a hilly and demanding course carried out at a good pace), it has in the end almost everything to please.

The range of the 2019 Citroen C4 Cactus includes 3 levels of finish. The entry-level Live, mid-range Feel, and e high-end shine. In the entry-level, the equipment endowments is damn enriched compared to previously, against an additional cost of 1 750 €

The restyling is an opportunity for the C4 cactus to equip itself with more technologies on the page. So the multimedia system becomes, optional, or high-end, compatible with Apple car Play, Android Auto, and Mirror screen. In addition, the now usual driving aids are appearing in the form of a pack, or as an option: oversight of blind spots, automatic parking, autonomous braking in the city in case of obstacle, reading of the signs, warning of Vehicle in blind spot, drowsiness alert, line crossing alert, etc. Not enough to make it a champion, but it is at the level.
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Price
By changing the category, from the urban crossover to the compact sedan, the C4 cactus faces a completely different competition, very sharpened. It is certainly less expensive than most, despite a consequent increase in prices. Certainly, its level of equipment increased. But its overall benefits can only be compared to those of a Peugeot 308 or a Volkswagen Golf, to name but a few. And his habitability and his chest volume, too. The basic version at 16 950 €, attractive rate, corresponds to a version 82 ch without suspensions with hydraulic stops. For a version 110 CH which is equipped with, and properly equipped (finish Feel), it is necessary to count 20 100 €. It is cheaper to 2 900 € than a PEUGEOT 308 1.2 Puretech 110 Active, but the Sicilienne has arguments in terms of quality of finish, space and driving dynamism, while also being comfortable. At the global, yes, the C4 Cactus is a good deal, but not really a compact one.
2019 Citroen C4 Cactus Review; Verdict
Without a doubt, the C4 cactus evolves in large widths. Aesthetically, everything changes or almost even if you recognize the bug at first glance. The equipment is enriched, the engine offer also, and the innovations in terms of comfort are real. Without a doubt, this new version is better than the previous one, despite the increase in prices, which is offset by the additional equipment.
But where the rub is that by positioning its former urban crossover in a compact sedan, Citroën is attacking a large part, and to strong cars. In urban crossovers, this C4 revisited Cactus would have its chances. On the compact side, its attractive rate is not enough to make you forget gaps and a habitability/chest in retreat.
Finally, the comfort gain brought by the new suspensions is, in our opinion, rather marginal. Yes, the C4 cactus is comfortable, but it was already before, and some compacts do as well with a classic.
So what to think? Will the evolution of style and the rise in the range finally bring back the customers? Will having the axles between two chairs still play bad tricks on this cactus? We’ll know in a few months.
