2020 Toyota Corolla Touring Sports | The Auris had replaced the Corolla and the Corolla now replaces the Auris. But that’s not the only thing that’s changing since Toyota’s now-only hybrid compact is being offered not only with what’s already under the hood of the peaceful Prius but with a brand new 180-hp suit!
The reasons for giving up the name of Auris to return to that of Corolla to designate the compact Toyota seems to vary significantly depending on the speaker and the time when the question is asked but the one that comes back most is that it is for the sake of global homogenization.
2020 Toyota Corolla Touring Sports Design
In terms of design, we come back with the first generation of Auris released in 2006 particularly bland. The drawing then took on personality with the second of the name from 2012 and even more with 2015 restyling, but without reaching the tortured and divisive excesses of his big sister, the Prius. And this new Corolla keeps this beautiful trajectory, with a very dynamic and even sporty result, which clearly distinguishes it from the rest of the production, a rarity nowadays. And the Touring Sports wagon version is even more successful, the longer rear overhang smoothly stretching the lines of the profile better compensating its counterpart in the front.
2020 Toyota Corolla Touring Sports Interior
Inside, the atmosphere is sophisticated with bluish lighting of the most beautiful effect, a good-quality finish, nice digital instrumentation of 7 inches lined with two half-meters and this huge 8-inch screen that dominates the board on board. It can be blamed for a not very aesthetic implementation but it is, however, a good way to have it easy in the field of vision and it also reduces sharply reflections. And since we are talking about equipment, Toyota has had a particularly heavy hand on those related to safety and driving aids at the entry level since adaptive cruise control, assistance in maintaining the path, panel reading and pre-collision with pedestrian and cyclist detection are standard from the first level of finishing. The following then add the active parking aid, the reversing camera or blind spot monitoring.
So far, this is the solid carton for this new Corolla. Let us, however, now turn to the subject that annoys us: habitability. No problem in front of course, but it’s not the same in the back. Even in the station wagon, which has 60 mm more wheelbase than the sedan, the knee room is counted and it is even worse at the head of the people of 1.80 m and over who is irreparably close Pavilion. Check the box for the panoramic sunroof option and you still lose 22 mm of roof clearance. Finally, probably because of the implantation of the battery, the seat is excessively firm.
2020 Toyota Corolla Touring Sports Trunk Capacity
Fortunately, the Corolla is catching up in terms of trunk volume. In any case, the 2020 Toyota Corolla Touring Sports since it offers 598 dm3 of capacity with the 1.8 and 581 dm3 with the 2.0 in configuration 5 places and 1 606 dm3 once the back of the back seat folded down. Values that make it one of the very best students in the first class in the class of compact breaks, unlike the sedan that crows bay crows at the bottom near the radiator: 361 dm3 for the 1.8 and even 313 dm3 for the 2.0, or values worthy of the lower category.
In the end, no matter the name, provided you have drunkenness, but not that caused by excessive vapors fuel. In its last months of commercialization, the Auris had already abandoned its two diesel engines 1.4 and 1.6 D-4D and was only available with the 1.2 T gasoline of 116 hp and the 136 hp hybrid powertrain Prius 3 but the Corolla goes further. It will offer a choice between two hybrids, including the 2ZR-FXE. This is the combination present on the Prius 4whose thermal part is ensured by a 1.8 supported by a synchronous motor permanent magnet 1MN 53 kW, itself powered by a lithium-ion battery. The unit delivers 122 hp at 5,200 rpm and 142 Nm at 3,600 rpm, allows a 0 to 100 km / h in 11.1 s (10.9 s for the sedan) with a mixed consumption NEDC correlated announced 3.3 l / 100 km and CO2 emissions of 76 g / km.
But the spotlight is turning instead to the second proposal, which equips our test model: the brand new M20A-FXS released for the occasion. This tandem, formed by a 2.0 and the same 1MN engine developing here 80 kW connected to a nickel-metal hydride battery, delivers a total of 180 hp at 6,000 rpm and 190 Nm from 4,400 to 5,200 rpm. With such a cavalry, the 2020 Corolla Touring Sports Trims the 0 to 100 km / h in 8.1 s (7.9 s for the sedan) with a combined consumption of 3.7 l / 100 km and 84 g/100 km of CO2 (85 g/km for the sedan). Both engines are coupled to an eCVT epicyclic gear train in the Toyota tradition.
Price & Equipment
If there is one area that everyone will agree, it is that tariffs, particularly competitive despite competition but not gasoline or diesel hybrid. Version 2.0 is accessible from € 31,950 directly with the third level of finish, Design.

In terms of options, there is a Techno pack (consisting of a JBL audio system with 8 speakers, an induction smartphone charger and head-up display), leather upholstery and a panoramic sunroof, all charged € 1,000 each.
Our test model is equipped with this new 2.0 180 hp and 190 Nm and it is the first time that a hybrid Toyota has such a cavalry. Let’s be clear: we already know that the Japanese brand knows how to make the chassis players and agile, the doubts are rather about the ability of the epicyclic train box to transmit power to the ground in an effective and fun way. On the other hand, in terms of efficiency, we are not doing better and this is the first area to validate. By adopting a smooth and quiet ride, the 2020 Toyota Corolla Touring Sports excelle: the two engines transmit the relay in a completely transparent way, a silence of cathedral reigns in the cockpit and the consumption is spectacularly low with an average much lower than 6 l/100 km in normal driving. By indulging in the pleasures of eco-driving, we even managed to reach a spectacular average of 4.5 l/100 km over nearly 90 km.
In terms of damping, we can quibble rather advising the 17-inch wheels than the 18-inch finish Collection, which allows having a higher tire flank thus better filter imperfections of the road, which otherwise reach sometimes to make their way into the cockpit. The atmosphere on board is otherwise perfectly serene with appreciable comfort without falling into the trap of excessive roll in curves.
If we raise the tone, which we are entitled to do in a 180 hp car (in compliance with the rules of the road obviously), the Corolla shows a dynamism of which no Auris was able, with a precise front train and remarkable agility. The punch is there, with a 0 to 100 km / h performed in a very respectable 8.1 s. ECVT transmission usually tends to “eat” power, giving acceleration that is not related, but not here. Far from it, since a Ford Focus SW 1.5 EcoBoost 182 BVA8 performs the same exercise in 8.5 s.
For approval, the eCVT has six virtual reports that can be ordered via paddles. This greatly limits the lyrical flights that we tend to blame this type of transmission but it is not miraculous so far. The feeling of the pallets themselves is not pleasant and leave in automatic is perhaps less immersive but in the end, remains more effective. Certainly, it is clearly the best CVT that exists today to drive dynamically but a conventional automatic or a double clutch still clearly hold the advantage in this area. Unsurprisingly, this Corolla is not a pure sports car but rather a GT ready to devour miles at a steady pace, in comfort and silence, while demonstrating exemplary sobriety.
